FALLS CHURCH, VA- The 15th season of Hablemos de Salud premiered nationally April 17 on MHz Worldview. The show airs each Saturday at 2 PM ET.
An original production of MHz Networks, the program is broadcast in Spanish, with English captions, and is filmed at the MHz Networks broadcast center and studios, just outside the nation’s capital. The program features commentary from Dr. Elmer Huerta on general health topics, medical news, answers to viewer calls and interviews with guests from various health-related fields.
While the U.S. health debate has loomed for the decades, the show has been a constant in providing community health literacy, with 15 years of uninterrupted broadcast.
Nationally-renowned cancer prevention specialist and radio personality Dr. Elmer Huerta has hosted the live call-in show since its inception, with co-host, Pablo Sanchez.
The idea to launch the show was generated in 1995 with the aim to provide expert medical advice to the underserved Spanish-speaking community.
According to the 2008 Issue Brief from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: America’s Health Literacy: Why We Need Accessible Health Information, the need for health literacy and accessible health information is imperative, with the most recent statistics indicating ‘only 12 percent of U.S. adults had proficient health literacy.’
The study continues: ‘Limited health literacy affects adults in all racial and ethnic groups. The proportion of adults with basic or below basic health literacy ranges from 28 percent of white adults, to 65 percent of Hispanic adults.’
Dr. Huerta notes, “Preventative medicine is key to life-long health. The information we bring to the viewers of Hablemos de Salud, as well as the way we deliver that information- in an open forum in Spanish- promotes a level of awareness that is so important to the community.”
The brief goes on to indicate: ‘all adults, regardless of their health literacy skills, were more likely to get health information from radio/television,’ making Hablemos de Salud the medium of choice for the distribution of health information.

The show is also broadcast nationwide in Peru and Bolivia via RTV Peru.
Audio of the show in syndication is also rebroadcast in the Denver market through special arrangement with the local MHz Worldview broadcast affiliate, KBDI.
